How To Soothe Sensitive Skin

Whether you’re going through menopause, adjusting to seasonal weather, have allergies, or just have super-irritable skin, keeping sensitive skin soothed can be a daily challenge. But there are many things you can do to keep your skin in a happy, even state — and it doesn’t have to involve expensive creams or procedures, either.

Use fragrance-free products created with anti-inflammatory ingredients. Plenty of skincare lines now offer fragrance-free products made with all-natural ingredients, many of which have anti-inflammatory properties. Look for ingredients like oatmeal and turmeric in the products you use. 

Take colder showers. If your shower is billowing with steam by the end, that’s way too much for your skin. (You’re not a lobster!) Super-hot water dries your skin and can even affect your hair — plus your energy bills will thank you!

Moisturize! Keeping skin hydrated and locking in moisture is one of the top ways to help reduce sensitivity. Gentle facial oils will add an extra barrier so moisture doesn’t escape your skin – And Aveeno’s oatmeal lotion is a classic for your body for a reason! 

Go organic! If it’s not just your face that’s sensitive, switch to using organic products when it comes to things that make direct contact with your epidermis. Think all-natural cleaning products, hand soap, and even laundry detergent — and if you’re hesitant about using them, trust us when we say the formulas have come a long way in recent years. They’re better for the environment and often come in more sustainable packaging anyway, so it’s a win-win for everyone. 

Don’t use scrubs with actual grit on your face. These micro-tear your skin, and can leave vulnerable skin looking red and irritated. If you want to exfoliate, use an enzyme exfoliator sparingly instead. 

Avoid perfumes! If you want to wear a scent, try a blend of essential oils instead.
