Make scars nearly invisible PDF Print E-mail

Make scars nearly invisibleScars can be reduced using pulsed light, and deep scars can be filled using injectable fillers called Restylane and Perlane. Restylane is for shallower scars and Perlane is for those that are deeper.

Results from Restylane and Perlane treatments generally last about six to 12 months, depending on your body chemistry and where the fillers are injected. If pulsed light treatment is used, follow-up treatments may also be needed to maintain results.

About pulsed light

Pulsed light systems are similar to lasers, but produce larger beams of light for wider coverage and faster, more comfortable treatments.

Without damaging the skin, pulses of intense light are directed into and absorbed by the skin, causing collagen and blood vessels beneath to constrict, tightening and smoothing the skin's surface. Collagen is the layer that serves as a support structure for the overlying layers of your skin, and wrinkles form in the areas where natural collagen diminishes. The procedure treats all skin types quickly, comfortably, and non-invasively.

The procedure improves the general texture of the skin, but is not effective on deeper wrinkles or deep scars (fractional lasers or Restylane and Perlane are used for that).

Our pulsed light equipment delivers energy to the skin over a relatively long period of time without overheating the outer layer of skin. This makes the pulses safer and more comfortable. You may experience a feeling similar to that of a rubber band being snapped on the skin, but most people do not report this sensation as painful. We may use a topical anesthetic to maximize your comfort.

You may experience temporary redness and a mild sunburn-like effect that may last a few hours to a few days. In rare instances, temporary swelling and/or blistering may occur.

You can resume your regular activities immediately.

For optimal results, a series of three to six treatments spaced 14 to 28 days apart is recommended. Talk to the doctor about how long results may last for you.

About Restylane

Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler injected into the skin to restore volume and fullness.

Restylane is different from bovine collagen injections. Although bovine collagen is also a filler, it is derived from cows and requires an allergy test. Restylane can be administered immediately - no waiting is required. Additionally, results using Restylane have been shown to last much longer than results from using standard bovine collagen injections.

Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel that is completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.

Restylane maintains its shape using the body's own moisture. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is hydrophilic or "water loving." As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide lasting results.

Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. (Restylane contains trace amounts of inactive bacterial proteins and is not advisable for patients with a history of allergies to such material.)

Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, we may decide to numb the treatment area.

After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you shouldn't use Restylane.

You should take a few precautions before being treated with Restylane. One week prior to treatment, avoid taking St. John's Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. The doctor may therefore prescribe a medication that will prevent a recurrence.

About Perlane

Perlane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler injected into the skin to restore volume and fullness.

Perlane is similar to Restylane, but the crystals that make up the filler are larger, so that they can fill deeper scars. This also means that there are additional precautions when using Perlane.

Perlane is different from bovine collagen injections. Although bovine collagen is also a filler, it is derived from cows and requires an allergy test. Perlane can be administered immediately - no waiting is required. Additionally, results using Perlane have been shown to last much longer than when standard bovine collagen injections are used.

After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, and bruising. This will normally last less than seven days. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial herpes (cold sores)  before, the trauma from an injection can cause the herpes to return. In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use Perlane if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting.
